Abe Lincoln’s Peekskill
One of my favorite twenty mile walks is to roam through Westchester County from Scarsdale to the river town of Peekskill. Old Abe visited the town in it’s heyday as he tried to drum up support for the epic battle against the southern states in the American union which would later become the bloody Civil War. Just across the Hudson is West Point and the United States Military Academy. The views of the river are still spectacular although the town of Peekskill has had it’s ups and downs. Usually when I reach the town I will take the bus back to Scarsdale. Tomorrow morning, however, I will continue walking north and then head west into the real hinterland of New York State.
